The role of video games in education and training.....

How can video games be used as a learning tool?

Video games play an important role in education and training. There are very many video games being increasingly recognized as good tools for educational purposes and in the world of training, because it presents new means through which a learner can be stimulated towards learning and better skills building. Their interactive nature has the potential to make more dynamic and entertaining old settings of learning.

One of the advantages of using video games in teaching is that they tend to promote active learning. More often than not, problems must be solved, decisions need to be made, and critical thinking applied; therefore, this is highly crucial in both academic and everyday life. This method results in deeper understanding and memory retention compared to a method where the learner simply is being passively presented information.

Moreover, video games can adapt to different learning styles. They can provide immediate feedback so students learn from their mistakes without much consequence. This is also helpful in keeping motivation at its best and even achieving better results. For example, simulation and role-playing games immerse learners into complex situations, where learners can hone their skills within a safe environment.

This makes it a necessity to carefully craft the tools that these educational institutions are going into video games. It would be nice to merge the content of educational material with the mechanics of the game to create something rich and meaningful, perhaps more than entertainment, that will prepare students and professionals for the future.
