 Impact of Automation on Employment: Managing Change in the Workforce....



Automation is transforming industries at unprecedented rates, and it throws important questions on the effect of automation on employment. While the technological advancements in the 21st century promise greater efficiency and productivity, they bring significant challenges for the workforce.


On the other hand, automation can displace jobs in several areas, mainly in manufacturing, retail, and logistics. Routine jobs are displaced more by machines, thereby contributing to job losses in the traditional line. It may further have a bigger impact on low-skilled workers with possible economic insecurity and the loss of jobs for many.


However, automation also offers opportunities for new jobs. Machines will take away the dull and repetitive jobs, and the need will be for more complex workers who can design and maintain these technologies and programs in them. Jobs are going up in data analysis, robotics, and IT support-a trend that is reflective of a shift in the marketplace toward more specialized positions.


For one, automation increases productivity. In this respect, increased productivity may translate to the economy, thereby leading to growth. Business operations can grow and become innovative, allowing it to expand into new markets that will generate new jobs. Working conditions also improve with automation because dangerous or repetitive tasks are done by the machines.


To adapt to this change, workers should learn and upskill constantly. Programs for education and vocational training need to evolve toward preparing people for work in the future and to equip the talent with the technological change to be able to deal with it. On the top of all of that, while automation presents negative changes, it will bring an opportunity to rethink how one does work and create an agile and skilled workforce.
