The Future of Autonomous Vehicles : Challenges and Opportunities.......



The much-touted autonomous vehicle are now no longer a futuristic notion-they're becoming a reality. Companies including Tesla, Waymo and traditional automakers are highly invested in developing self-driving cars; we now stand at the threshold of revolutionizing transportation. While there is much excitement around the concept significant challenges lie ahead combined with some opportunities.


Perhaps the most enormous opportunity that AVs offer is better road safety. As human error accounts for nearly all car accidents  autonomous vehicles with sophisticated sensors and AI can significantly decrease accident rates. Additionally autonomous vehicles can provide mobility for those who cannot drive because of medical or other reasons-than to open up personal transportation possibilities for the majority of people.


But there are challenges. One major challenge is technological reliability: though the pictures are exciting AVs have much work to do to get to the point of a reliable and consistent solution for complex drivering scenarios such as navigating in bad weather or unpredictable traffic. Safety raises legal questions about liability: who can be blamed if a self-driving car gets into an accident?


Infrastructure is a major issue. The creation of roads, traffic systems and laws was made with the human driver in mind. Mass adoption of AVs necessitates considerable smart infrastructure and new laws.


There is also social impact. AVs do save some accidents. However they may take jobs away from truckers, taxi drivers and delivery personnel. Millions would lose their jobs. Policymakers and the rest of the society will not know how to weigh this disruption against the benefits of automation.


Much hope exists for autonomous vehicles despite the numerous obstacles. Eventually this could make transportation safer more efficient and accessible to all. The road is long but it's evident that self-driving cars have the power to reshape our world.
